One of the biggest transformations from AI is the new ability of every person to write code. This is a bigger deal than it seems.
Today, most people can use computers, and their data, through apps, and as a result are limited by the choices of their makers. But being able to write and execute code unleashes the full power of computing and that will fundamentally change how knowledge work is being done.
Being able to build apps from simple prompts is valuable, but there is a bigger way AI coding is going to play out - Scripts. Scripts are programs that do things. They interact with different systems and take actions, step by step, to automate complete workflows.
We don't think people want more apps and interfaces to learn. People want to get things done. We believe the transformative power of AI for knowledge work will manifest in scripting.
Very soon, everyone will casually write one-off scripts to analyze data, manipulate it, and move it around, and they will turn those scripts into automated workflows. Every person will use code and AI to scale their taste, decision-making, and differentiated qualities to have a bigger impact.
Many companies try to shape AI agents to resemble human employees as closely as possible but this is misguided. The intelligence of LLMs is spiky: In some fields, they've been superhuman for a while, in others, they'll remain dumber for some time.
Much of the way we interface with human employees was shaped by human shortcomings that AI doesn't have, and relies on qualities that AI does not yet possess. We strive to design the best tools around this novel technology from first principles, rather than trying to force a traditional one.
Our mission is to give everyone superpowers to solve scriptable work. To do away with repetitive tasks, mundane work, and undifferentiated effort. To direct humans' attention to exercising their unique taste, judgment, and creativity.
